SeaWorld Trainer Death: Ex-worker criticizes animal-training oversight. FL, USA

Captivity News

RexyJade writes "For many years, SeaWorld singled out animal training — the department responsible for the company's trainer-safety protocols — from the rest of its animal disciplines.

The company had a corporate-level executive responsible solely for overseeing animal training in all SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks. Each park also had its own vice president in charge of animal training who worked equally alongside another vice president in charge of animal care, aquariums and aviaries."

Was Tilikum Savage or Stressed?

Captivity News

A slight departure from furry to finned this week. Let’s talk about whales and dolphins - mammals uniquely similar to humans in terms of intelligence and family structure.

The tragic loss of a SeaWorld trainer dragged to a watery death by a 12,300 lb. killer whale sparked media buzz around the world. Most news reports sensationalized the horror of it all--a seasoned trainer killed by her prized co-star before a live audience. With two other fatalities under his fin, “Tilikum” now a killer in the truest sense.

Andrew Harris Blog: Only humans can stop animal exhibition.

Captivity News

The thought of a family audience watching a killer whale mortally attack his trainer should give us all one more good reason not to support animal exhibitions. Watching video of a “trained” tiger suddenly mauling and killing its handler should be another convincing example.
