They may be the most beloved creatures in the world, certainly as far as wild animals are concerned. And they have been for centuries, rhapsodized by the great Greek philosopher Plutarch as unique animals who sought Ultimate Guide: Dolphins

But as is usually the case with nature, dolphins aren't always what we'd like them to be. Recently, scientists have reported unexplained dolphin attacks on porpoises and even young dolphins. And some humans expecting a transcendent experience swimming with the saintly animals have instead ended up with bites or bruises.

So what to make of dolphins? Clearly they are unusually intelligent animals with a uniquely complex means of communicating with each other. But researchers are only now beginning to get a clearer picture of how these animals have survived for millions of years and, more importantly, what we can do to make sure they stay around for another million.
