Update: PG dolphins 'died of oil pollution'. Iran

Dolphins washed up along the coast of Iran's southern port of Jask in the Persian Gulf have died of oil pollution, a new survey finds.

Director General of Hormozgan Department of Environment Mehrdad Katal-Mohseni said the death of the dolphins could also be attributed to other polluting sources.

Discharge of waste into the Persian Gulf, human activities and industrial operations can also be to blame for the death of the mammals, he added.

Last week, carcasses of 79 dolphins were found near the coast of Jask. Some three years ago, in a similar incident, 64 dolphins were washed ashore.

So far, 13 dolphin species have been identified in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea--some of which on the brink of extinction.
