TMMSN News : Recent Live Stranding - 17 June 2010. TX, USA

lauricedeephd writes "Here is the following news from the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN) newsletter that I just received this evening:

On June 17, 2010 TMMSN Corpus Christi region responded to a live melon headed whale (peponocephala electra) stranding on Matagorda Island. The animal was in poor condition and logistics for accessing the island provided a very difficult challenge for the team. In the best interest of the animal, the decision was made to euthanize on the beach and was transferred to Galveston shortly after. The necropsy was performed by Dr. Daniel Cowan and initially revealed a brain hemorrhage as well as the presence of parasites in the air sinuses which we have found in previous cases of this particular species. Further processing of additional samples will be completed.

As of now, the above news has not been posted in the main website. But it should sometime soon. Look for that piece of news in the 'What's New' section.
